The John Downton Awards were first organised in 2000 at the request of Miss Hilda Downton, sister of the celebrated Kent artist, poet and philosopher, John Downton. Hosted by Kent County Council on behalf of the John Downton Trust, this competition has been held annually ever since to commemorate his life and work by recognising the achievements of the young artists of Kent, aged 11-18.
The awards encourage and celebrate the creativity and diversity of expression of the county’s students, inviting Kent schools and colleges to participate and exhibit the best examples of their painting, drawing, mixed media and photography.
The work is judged by an experienced panel, which this year comprised of Dr. Andrew Conio, Artist and Author; Karen Eslea, Head of Learning and Visitor Experience, Turner Contemporary; Sara Woodward, Board of Trustees, Turner Contemporary and Carling Maling, Undergraduate and ART31 member.
The 2018 exhibition took place in County Hall, Maidstone from October 22, 2018 to January 2, 2019 and all the winning entries are exhibited here.
