We’re Kids in Museums Award Winners
We’ve won Best Medium Museum at the Family Friendly Museum Awards!
Run by charity Kids in Museums, the national award celebrates museums, galleries, historic homes or heritage sites in the UK that go the extra mile to provide a great experience for families.
Launched in 2004, the award has become a benchmark for excellence in the heritage sector. Each year Kids in Museums receives hundreds of public nominations, which are whittled down to a shortlist by an expert panel. The final say goes to families, who visit each shortlisted museum over the summer holidays, and decide the winners.
Competing against three other museums in the Best Medium Museum category, family judges praised the child-focused features and spaces, interactive artworks and welcoming environment, including breastfeeding-friendly areas. Families also liked the gallery’s excellent facilities, including clear signage, accessibility, and spacious areas for buggies. They also appreciated the family tours, Turner Contemporary’s involvement in the local community and commitment to accessibility, including providing BSL gallery tours and large-print information.
One family judge said: “An absolutely brilliant children’s specific gallery where we spent a lot of time. There was a lovely exhibition of local children’s work, from a wide range of ages with the children’s interpretation.”
We’re so proud of our brilliant front-of-house and learning teams who work hard to make the gallery an inspiring place for visitors of all ages, and can’t wait to welcome more families in to discover the joy of art.

About Turner Contemporary
Turner Contemporary is one of the UK’s leading art galleries. Founded in 2001 to celebrate JMW Turner’s connection to Margate, the gallery was designed by David Chipperfield and officially opened in 2011. Turner Contemporary’s mission extends beyond showcasing world-class exhibitions; it plays a pivotal role in driving the social and economic regeneration of Margate and East Kent, transforming lives in one of the most deprived areas of the UK.
Since opening, Turner Contemporary has welcomed over 4.1 million visitors, contributed more than £80 million to the Kent economy, and connected with thousands of local residents through its world-class creative learning programme.
