We Won Gold at Last Week's UK Graphic Awards 2024

Site-specific artwork O Esplendor, designed by artist Beatriz Milhazes and produced by Vinyline Graphics, has won First Prize in the Museums & Galleries award category of the UK Graphic Awards 2024.

Working with the idea of stained glass but using translucent vinyl, O Esplendor combined natural motifs from Milhazes’ landscape in Rio with the breathtaking view from our Sunley Gallery Window, seamlessly blending it with her home horizon, the vast expanse of the ocean, and the limitless sky.

The UK Graphic Awards, now in their fourth year, recognise the most creative and impactful wide-format digital print projects produced in the UK over the past year.

According to the judges, this extraordinary project by Vinyline won first prize because of its complex, yet deceptively simple looking, design. They praised the unique way in which the window display was able to transform the gallery and its surrounding space.

We’re honoured to have received first place and are grateful to Vinyline and Beatriz Milhazes for their design and production of the window display, which was on view as part of Milhazes’ solo exhibition Maresias at Turner Contemporary from 27 May to 10 September 2023.

About Beatriz Milhazes

Milhazes emerged in the 1980s as a leading figure in the important Brazilian art movement Geração Oitenta (1980s Generation), which moved away from the austere conceptual art of the previous decade and embraced painting as a form of energy and expression. Today, Milhazes is known for intensely colourful, large-scale abstract canvases which present energetic contradictions: from the tension between carefully planned construction and appearance of spontaneity, to slick surfaces that belie tiny cracks and layers. Her works combine references deeply rooted in Brazilian contexts and heritage with elements of western abstraction and the influence of artists including Sonia Delaunay, Henri Matisse and Bridget Riley. Beatriz Milhazes was born in 1960 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where she lives and works.
