As Margate Pride embarks on a landmark project called 'Heritage Hotline', we reflect on its history as an arts-and-culture-led, grassroots Pride initiative over the last ten years, and think about what the future may hold. This panel talk, with past and present Directors Dan Chilcott, Tryg Verran, Mia Pollak and Amy Redmond, and Chaired by Robert Diament, accompanies an exhibition at Projects Kavel Rafferty that runs from 25 February to 3 March.
The Panel
Robert Diament
Robert is Director of Carl Freedman Gallery: a commercial contemporary art gallery in Margate, and Counter Editions: a company that produces prints and multiples by leading contemporary artists; and co-host and author of the hit podcast and book series Talk Art.
Dan Chilcott
Dan Chilcott is Executive Director of Margate Creative Land Trust, an independent charity developing permanently affordable creative workspace. Dan's background is socially engaged arts practice (craft, performance, installation) using knitting. He co-curated Margate Now arts festival for three years and previously worked for Creative UK in the South East and nationally. He co-founded Margate Pride and has a personal research interest in local cultural and queer heritage.
Tryg Verran / aka Tommy Poppers
Human. Wordsmith. Educator. Bard of the Backroom. Tryg has worn a multitude of different hats over the years: farmer, waiter, sailor, rockstar, international teacher and volunteer. He is currently researching the extent to which the environment affects language production - myathkar.org.
Amy Redmond
Amy Redmond has spent two decades creating vital spaces for LGBTQ+ expression and belonging. Her community-building work has been recognised by Amnesty International, Attitude Awards, and the Mayor of Margate for outstanding contributions to the town's diverse fabric.
Mia Pollak
Working in the arts for over 20 years, Mia is committed to inclusive arts and heritage engagement, platforming and supporting creativity, and advancing social justice. She has worked as a creative producer and arts fundraiser, delivering projects for organisations including the V&A, Tate Modern, the National Trust, the BFI and the Royal Albert Hall. She is also a traditional signwriter, specialising in gilding and working with glass.
