Antony Gormley's sculpture will stay in Margate until November 2020

The sculpture, ANOTHER TIME XXI, 2013 which is sited on Fulsam Rock in front of the gallery has been granted an extension and will remain in place until November 2020.

ANOTHER TIME is a series of one hundred, solid cast-iron figures by Antony Gormley who is known for his sculptures and installations that explore the experience of being human, of inhabiting a human body. Antony Gormley won the Turner Prize in 1994, Turner Contemporary will host Turner Prize, one of the most prestigious prizes for visual arts in the world, in Autumn 2019.

ANOTHER TIME has caused much sensation. In October 2017, a 75 metre long cargo vessel ran aground and almost collided with the sculpture. The incident caused crowds to flock to Margate’s harbour arm and was subsequently featured in The Sun, The Times, Sky News and others.

Popular among dog walkers, day trippers and photographers, the sculpture has been the subject of thousands of Instagram posts. Social media fans have commented to share their enthusiasm for the sculpture.

Following a complex installation process where a new mounting method was designed to ensure that the bolts fixing it in place were hidden, Turner Contemporary’s partners Considine Ltd have been shortlisted for the Structural Awards for their work on the project. They are in the running to win the award for ‘Structures in Extreme Conditions’.

Inspired by the extreme tides and elements that the sculpture plays witness to, Turner Contemporary’s Learning team have devised a brand new tour for local primary school children, which ventures outside of the gallery setting. The tour offers the children the chance to inquire about the sculpture, it’s relation to the wider landscape and natural world as well as the skies that JMW Turner, the gallery’s namesake, was so inspired by.

Individual sculptures from ANOTHER TIME have been installed all over the world, from the River Thames in London to Kunisaki in Japan, and there is at work in Folkestone that will be on view for three years. The figure positioned on Fulsam Rock on the Margate foreshore, is visible at low tide from our first floor balcony and from the shoreline behind the gallery.
