Next generation of ocean champions gather for One Ocean 2026 Schools Day

22 June 2026

150 pupils from five local primary schools launched Turner Contemporary's One Ocean programme through hands-on activities exploring biodiversity, sustainability and the future of our oceans.

On Friday 19 June, 150 pupils from five local primary schools gathered at Turner Contemporary for the One Ocean 2026 Schools Day, the opening event of this year's One Ocean programme.

Working with organisations including Bird Wise East Kent, Thanet Coast Project, Thanet District Council, Flints and Kent Downs National Landscape, children took part in a series of activities exploring coastal environments, biodiversity, sustainability and the role they can play in protecting the ocean.

Kaia, Year 4, said ‘I wish that we looked after our ocean better and then more animals can come and live in it.’

The day brought together Young Environmental Leaders who have been working with Turner Contemporary throughout the year alongside their classmates, placing young people at the centre of conversations about creativity, environmental responsibility and our shared relationship with the sea. Throughout the day, it became clear that we have a remarkably well-informed generation of young ocean advocates in the making. When asked the question ‘Why are we getting warmer seas?’ there was no hesitation; the chorused response was ‘climate change!’
