Turner Contemporary to host One Night Festival in collaboration with People Dem Collective and Diasporas Now

20 August, 2024

Ebun Sodipo, Celeste: She of the Sea

Turner Contemporary, in collaboration with Black-led, Margate-based community organisation People Dem Collective and performance platform Diasporas Now, presents Turner Lates: Movements from the Margins on Friday 30 August from 5:30–9pm. This pilot festival spans performance art, live music, film screenings, panel talks, and DJ sets with cross-diasporic lineups.

This co-curated evening will feature performances from record labels Touching Bass (Errol Anderson and Alex Rita) and PRAH Recordings (Tony Njoku and Donna Thompson) and Movements from the Margins Resident Artists (Ray Felix Carter and Ilā Kamalagharan, Sola, and Yewande Adeniran, selected via national open call). Expect healing workshops and film screenings (including multidisciplinary artists Rieko Whitfield, Ebun Sodipo, Peter Spanjer), a panel talk hosted by guest of honour Lisa Anderson with representatives from People Dem Collective, Diasporas Now, and Touching Bass, and curated nourishment bringing Afro-Caribbean flavours to the Margate seaside (by Dee’s Table and Kromanti Rum).

The event is inspired by Turner Contemporary’s current exhibition on the pioneering painter Ed Clark, and his own strategies of seeking global support networks as an African-American artist during the Abstract Expressionist movement, to platform perspectives from the peripheries into the cultural canon.

In this ethos, Movements from the Margins is a coming together—an embodiment of improvisation, intuition and experimentation in community organising as a collective spiritual practice.

About Diasporas Now

Diasporas Now is a platform for expanded performance by the global majority, programming curated events that bridge workshops, panel discussions, museum lates, and nightlife. Their community celebrates cross-diasporic identities and champions artists of colour.

The platform was founded in 2021 by artists Rieko Whitfield, Paola Estrella, and Lulu Wang at the Royal College of Art. Originally focused on live-streamed programming, Diasporas Now has since expanded to live events at the intersection of performance art, visual art, music, dance, and fashion.

About PRAH Recordings

PRAH Recordings started off 10 years ago to release contemporary classical and experimental music and to work with artists who exist on the weirder fringes of pop music. It has released records by some notable creatives including the first release from Oliver Coates and later successes like Group Listening and Falle Nioke. Over the last decade it’s added a studio complex in Margate to further enable its artists to indulge their creative desires and although having a broader remit than in its earlier years still very much focuses on giving artists free reign to experiment in their field.
