About Bird Wise East Kent
Bird Wise East Kent is a partnership of local authorities and conservation organisations, working together to mitigate disturbance to birds that winter on the Special Protection Area (SPA) of the Thanet Coast and Sandwich Bay. Each year, thousands of wildfowl and waders arrive in Kent from as far afield as the Arctic. They spend the short winter days feeding and resting, conserving energy for the long return journey to their summer breeding grounds. When disturbed, the birds may stop feeding or fly away, wasting vital energy. This coastline is extremely popular with a large number of people for a variety of recreational activities, but this popularity can harm wintering birds. The project aims to raise awareness of disturbance issues, allowing visitors to continue enjoying the coast whilst preventing disturbance to the birds. Disturbance can be caused by many different activities. Bird Wise wants to work with everyone using the coast to ensure that those activities can continue without having a detrimental impact on wintering birds.
One Ocean 2026 is a weekend of free talks, workshops and screenings on art, adaptation and the future of our oceans. Supported by the UK National Commission for UNESCO, Turner Contemporary presents a rich public programme of talks, documentary and artist film screenings, workshops and community activities. Through art, science and storytelling, One Ocean translates complex environmental issues into accessible, action-driven experiences.
