Designed for performers ready to deepen their improvisation practice, the course focuses on scene work, emotional connection, group dynamics, and building compelling improvised performances from the ground up. Through weekly sessions, participants will develop confidence, sharpen listening and collaboration skills, and explore how to create grounded, engaging scenes in the moment.
Led by instructors trained in The Free Association’s acclaimed approach to long-form improv, the course combines structured learning with play, spontaneity, and performance practice in a supportive and creatively energising environment.
What you will explore

The course is open to those who have completed a Level 1 improv course, or performers with equivalent long-form improvisation experience.

The Free Association
For over a decade The Free Association (The FA) has been the best place to watch and learn Improv in London.
Working in partnership with Chump’s Comedy, this Margate programme brings The Free Association’s training approach to Turner Contemporary, creating space for experimentation, connection, and performance development by the sea.
Muireann Kelly
Muireann Kelly has been performing improv comedy for nearly a decade. She regularly performs in London and at festivals across Europe as part of the FA team ‘Nana’ and is developing a new format with The Pretend Company Autumn 2025 ensemble. Since completing her FA training, she has continued learning with instructors from Upright Citizens Brigade, The Annoyance Theatre, iO Theater, and Improv Theatre Sydney. She previously wrote, performed, and produced a monthly sketch night with Next Level Sketch and was a contributor to The Onion ('America’s Finest News Source') for three years.
Chumps Comedy
Chump’s Comedy has been bringing the laughs to Margate since May 2023, curating inclusive and diverse comedy line-ups that showcase the best established and emerging talent. From intimate work-in-progress nights to high-energy touring shows, Chump’s champion comedy that’s as varied and vibrant as the audiences they serve.
