The £20 note featuring Turner Contemporary's iconic building enters circulation

The £20 note featuring J.M.W. Turner, a celebrated 19th-century painter known for his landscapes and seascapes, came into circulation on February 20, 2020.

The £20 note featuring J.M.W. Turner, a celebrated 19th-century painter known for his landscapes and seascapes, came into circulation on February 20, 2020. The note includes a see-through window with blue and gold foil on the front that depicts Turner Contemporary, an art gallery in Margate, England, as well as the Margate lighthouse, both of which were associated with Turner during his lifetime. This makes Turner Contemporary the first contemporary building to be featured on a UK bank note. The new £20 note was unveiled at Turner Contemporary by the Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, in October 2019.
