Join OSE Associate Kiera Saunders & An(Dre)a Spisto for a costume making and performance workshop that responds to ideas around hybridity and non-human perspectives.

In this world where we often feel small, strange and insignificant, observing and learning from bugs and small living beings is a way into a deeper understanding of ourselves. As a person who exists often in the fringes of society due to neurodiversity, immigration, gender identity and queerness, there is much solace, beauty and power to be found in exploring creatures that exist in between window sills, pavement cracks and under rocks.

Combining Dre’s experiences in clown, physical theatre and performance art with Keira’s passion for mask and costume, we are planning a playful, silly and visionary time exploring movement, masks and performance through the lens of the bug.

An(Dre)a Spisto makes a mish mash of live theatre, art buffoonery, gallery interventions, filmed and live filmed performance with a current view into technology, media and its relationship to perspectives as a queer, neurodiverse, immigrant. Trained at Lispa (Art-Haus Berlin) in Lecoq and embodied practices with a focus on clown through mask. Andrea’s work has been described as genre smashing, surreal, gentle and exuberant.

Dre’s solo work is based on playful autobiographical exploration through physical masks (characters) that delve into the corners of the psyche. Working with thematic vignettes, live improvisation, movement and music. Dre’s show El Dizzy Beast is showing at Soho Theatre February 22-23rd 2023

OSE Public Programme 2022-23

This event is held as part of Open School East’s 2022-23 Associate-led Public Programme. This year’s Associate-led Public Programme responds to themes of social & ecological hybridity, as set out in the Associate’s first term curriculum entitled When The World Looks Back At You: about storytelling, ecology and the weird led by artist Saelia Aparicio. Through explorations of the voice, the body and sensitive connections with natural and man-made networks that unite the world around us, the Associate-led Public Programme looks to and explores creativity and collectivity in green spaces.

This year we’re excited to announce our partnership with Turner Contemporary, who are generously hosting part of the public programme.

Turner Contemporary is one of the UK’s leading art galleries. Founded to celebrate JMW Turner’s connection to Margate in 2001, the David Chipperfield designed gallery opened in 2011.
