Portfolio is a free platform for young people living in Kent and Medway to get their art and ideas out in the world. Each year we collaborate with a local organisation to set the brief and select work to be shown as part of our summer exhibition.

This year Turner Contemporary has collaborated with RISE. UP. CLEAN. UP. to select the chosen works.

The theme: Rising

We are living in a time of climate crisis. Rising consumption leads to rising numbers of plastics produced which leads to rising pollution, rising temperatures and rising sea levels. Raising awareness of these issues is leading to rising activism, rising social outcry, and a future generation with a rising desire to do things differently. Portfolio   X   RISE UP. CLEAN UP. includes art that addresses the full spectrum of these issues.

Meet the artists

Caitlin Mathieson:

“I was really honoured to hear my work ‘Siren’ had been selected to be in this year’s Portfolio Exhibition at the Turner Contemporary Art Gallery in Margate.

We attended a private viewing of Portfolio where I was able to celebrate the works on display and also do some screen printing with artist Jordan Gray too.

The exhibition goes live from Saturday 27th May and will be on display till Sunday 10th September.  This is their busiest exhibition time and therefore I can expect my work to be viewed over 50,000 times from people all over the world – what an amazing opportunity to have my work shown! Why not make a day of it and have a look!”

Izzy Wedderburn

“Just wanted to say a big thank you for yesterday afternoon. I thought the exhibition was beautiful, and so carefully curated. I felt so lucky to be part of such a positive event and cause, so thank you for choosing my book to be part of the exhibition. I hope others will enjoy it as much as I did over the summer months.”

Tara Gill

“It was amazing and inspiring to see everyone’s artwork displayed. I feel very fortunate to have my painting included in the exhibition. The screen printing was really interesting and it was fun to be able to print our certificates.”

Max Coker

“I really enjoyed seeing my art work displayed along with all the other young artists. I really hope that people understand the damage global warming, pollution and climate change is having on our planet! #savethepolarbears.”

“RUCU was founded in the Summer of 2020, in response to the volume of litter left on Margate Main Sands. Although our focus is on (the surprisingly complex and sometimes overwhelming) issue of litter on Margate Main Sands, grassroots activism is at our heart.

“See a problem. Take action. Implement change.

“Through this Portfolio project, alongside the Rise Up Residency, the regular community litter picks, the beachfront TidyPac stations, the art workshops, the community event support, the train station art installation (which we would very much like to put back in Margate Train Station!), our regular engagments with the local council, and our future plans, we are changing the way people interact with Margate Main Sands and our local environment. And we’re demonstrating that anyone can do it!

“We are 100% volunteer run and rely solely on donations to operate.”
