Turner Contemporary is committed to protecting your personal information and being transparent about what information we hold, whether you are a donor, volunteer, shopper, audience member, visitor or participant.

The purpose of this Privacy Policy (‘Policy’) is to give you a clear explanation about how  Turner Contemporary and its subsidiaries collect and use the personal information (or personal data) you provide to us and that we collect, whether online, via phone, email, in letters or in any other correspondence or from third parties.

Developing a better understanding of our visitors, participants and supporters through your  personal information allows us to understand you  better, fundraise more efficiently, and ultimately continue to present our world-class programme of exhibitions and events. We regularly review and make improvements to this Policy to ensure that transparency is at the core of what we do and that we are adhering to best practice.

We ensure that we use your personal information in accordance with the law. This Policy explains:

1. Who We Are

Turner Contemporary is a leading gallery and arts charity in the UK and our registered charity number is 1129974 in England and Wales. Our charity is also registered in England and Wales as a company limited by guarantee under number 06772337.

In this Policy ‘we’ means both the charity and its subsidiary trading on its behalf who is Turner Contemporary Enterprises Limited a registered company in England and Wales number 07402604.

The charity and its subsidiary may collect and decide for themselves how to use your personal information. The legal phrase that’s used to describe an organisation that makes these decisions is ‘data controller’.

In this policy, “we,” “us,” and “our” means Turner Contemporary, and Turner Contemporary Enterprises and “you” means the individual to whom the information relates.

2. What we collect

  • your name, your contact information such as your address, email address and telephone number and, where applicable, your social media profile
  • your date of birth
  • financial information you provide where you make a payment to us or we make a payment to you, such as your bank details or debit/credit card details, although we don’t store debit/credit card details
  • information about your computer/mobile device and your visits to and use of this website, including your IP address, your browser type and language, and your geographic location
  • information about your attendance of, and interest in, Turner Contemporary events and exhibitions (including photographs at events where signage indicates that this is the case), or any other goods or services which we consider of interest to you
  • your declaration as to whether you are a taxpayer so that we can claim Gift Aid, if applicable
  • information about you that you give us in person, by filling in forms on our site (our site) (e.g. the ‘contact us’ section or to sign up to our mailing list) or by corresponding with us by phone, e-mail, post or otherwise
  • Content you post on our social media (text, images, photographs, messages, comments or any other kind of content that is not your e-mail address)
  • Feedback and correspondence, such as information you provide in your responses to surveys, when you participate in audience research activities, report a problem with our building or website, receive customer support, report  lost property  or otherwise correspond with us
  • Transaction information, such details about purchases you make through the Site, registrations you make through our Site or when you buy from related third party sites like Eventbrite, where we may sell goods and services from time-to-time, and billing details
  • Usage information, such as information about how you use our website and interact with us
  • Marketing information, such as your preferences for receiving marketing communications and details about how you engage with them
  • Any other personal information you share with us as described above

3. How we collect information about you 

We collect information about you in the following ways:

  • information you give to us when you make an enquiry, make a donation, visit Turner Contemporary, register for or attend a gallery event or activity, or otherwise provide us with personal information
  • collecting information when you engage with our digital platforms, including social media, email marketing and our website
  • your use of the forms on our website or on third-party partner websites that you choose to interact with, for example websites such as JustGiving when donating to us
  • supply us with a service or we supply you with goods or a service
  • Information available publicly, such as information found in places such as Companies House, Charities Commission Register, LinkedIn and information that has been published in articles/newspapers. Please see ‘How we combine and analyse the information we collect about you’ to find out more.

Wherever possible we use aggregated or anonymous information which does not identify individuals by name. See below How we use your information to understand our purposes for processing your personal information.

4. Do we process Sensitive Personal Information?

Certain categories of personal information are regarded by the law as more sensitive than others. This is known as ‘special category’ or ‘sensitive personal data’ and covers things like information about your health, ethnic origin, religious beliefs, political opinions or any genetic or biometric data that is used to identify you.

We do not usually collect ‘sensitive personal data’ about our supporters unless there is a clear reason for doing so, such as where we need this information to ensure that we provide appropriate facilities or medical support to enable you to safely participate in our activities or events. We may also collect sensitive personal data if you make the information public or if you tell us about your experiences relating to art and culture (for example, if you agree to act as a case study for us).

We will always make it clear when we collect this information from you what sensitive personal data we are collecting and why.

5.       Your debit and credit card information

If you use your credit or debit card to donate to us, buy something or pay for an event ticket or a registration online, we will use a specialist payment processor. We will also ensure that card details are handled securely under Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standards. For more information about these Standards see here –

We never store your credit or debit card details following the completion of your transaction. All card details and validation codes are securely destroyed by our third-party payment service provider once the payment or donation has been processed.

Please do not send an email containing any credit or debit card details, since it will be immediately deleted and no payment will be taken. If this happens, we’ll let you know.

All purchases or donations should be completed through the donation page or online shop on our website ( or via our on-site shop at Turner Contemporary’s building.

6.       Job applicants

If you apply to work at Turner Contemporary, we will only use the information you give us to process your application or to monitor recruitment statistics on an unidentified basis. If we want to disclose information to someone outside Turner Contemporary, for example, if we need a reference from your previous employer, we will tell you beforehand. The only exception is where the law obliges us to disclose information to a third party (such as the police) and we are not allowed to tell you.

If you are unsuccessful in your job application, we may hold your personal information after we’ve finished recruiting for the post you applied for, for up to 12 months to deal with any follow up queries or issues.

We keep statistical information about all applicants to develop our recruitment processes however no individual applicant would be identifiable from this information.

If you commence employment with Turner Contemporary, your personal information will be processed in accordance with your employment contract and other applicable human resources policies we have from time to time.

7. What we do with the information we gather

We use your personal information for several purposes, including to:

  • provide information about exhibitions, services and events that you have requested;
  • keep you informed about exhibitions, artists, events and campaigns that we think you may find interesting although this will only be where you have consented to being contacted for those purposes unless Turner Contemporary is in a position to rely on the Legitimate Interest basis for contacting you (see further information below under Legal Basis for Processing);
  • process donations from you
  • fundraise in a manner referred to in this Policy or that you would reasonably expect
  • deliver products or services to you
  • process orders from our shops or provide after-sales service
  • complete administration, for example regarding a donation you have made or the event you have registered for
  • manage records or processes internally, such as record keeping of enquiries, feedback or complaints
  • invite you to participate in surveys or research (although this is voluntary)
  • administer our site and for internal operations, including using IP address to identify approximate location, to block disruptive use, record website traffic, troubleshooting, data analysis, testing, research, statistical and survey purposes
  • analyse and improve the online services we offer, to make them as user-friendly as possible
  • collect personal information, where relevant, to conduct supporter research and this is on occasion through our existing network. We may also analyse information you provide to us with other freely available public information to create a profile of supporter interests, preferences and level of potential donations so that we can contact you in the most appropriate way and with the most relevant information (for more information about this use, see How will you combine and analyse the information we collect about you?)
  • keep our site safe and secure
  • comply with legal and regulatory obligations
  • maintain security and to check your identity
  • achieve other specific purposes that you may agree to from time to time

8. How we combine and analyse the information we collect about you

Before contacting you, we may use data analysis to interpret your data and predict how likely you are to be interested in or responsive to a campaign or fundraising message. Where we have identified at a higher level that you have the capacity and/or affinity to support Turner Contemporary, we may collect additional information about you (see ‘How we use your information’) and combine, analyse and compile that information into a profile of you in order to assist us in engaging with you in a more personalised way.

We typically look at and combine information published in the media but other commonly used publicly available sources including company resources, the Electoral Register and any data you choose to make public on LinkedIn such as your professional memberships and networks. We may also use any publicly available data that you share on social media. We may use additional information such as geographical information for measures of affluence where available. To do this efficiently, we may occasionally use trusted third-party specialist companies that collate and analyse information from public registers alongside statistical social-economic data to automate some of this work. This helps us to understand more about your interests and level of potential engagement or donation.

You can opt out of your data being combined and analysed for marketing purposes by contacting our Development Team or our Data Protection Office as set out in the Contact Us section below.

Please note that before seeking or accepting major donations we are required to conduct a minimum level of due diligence. This is in accordance with our legal and regulatory obligations and our internal risk management policies and procedures. This means that if you opt out of analysis of your data, we may still conduct some analysis that is required to enable us to accept donations from you.

9. Legal basis for processing

The law requires us to set out the lawful grounds on which we collect and process your personal information as described in this Policy. Our processing of your personal information is necessary:

  • for the performance of contracts to which you will be a party to and in order to take steps at your request prior to you entering into those contracts;
  • for the purposes of legitimate interests pursued by us; or
  • in order to comply with a legal obligation to which we are subject.

In relation to any processing of special categories of personal data, we will generally rely on obtaining specific consent from you at the time unless there is otherwise a legal requirement for us to process such information.

Depending on the purposes for which we use your data, one or more of the grounds listed below may be relevant.

Legitimate interests

We rely on the “legitimate interest’ ground for processing where we believe it is in the legitimate interests of you, as the data subject, or of Turner Contemporary, to process your data. Where we process your information in this way, we also consider and balance any potential impact on you (both positive and negative), and your rights under data protection laws. We will not use your personal information for activities where our interests are overridden by the impact on you, for example where collection and use of your information would be excessively intrusive (unless, for instance, we are otherwise required or permitted to by law). We will only use your information in accordance with the purposes described in this Policy. Examples of processing based on legitimate interests grounds are:

  • collecting personal information to provide you with a smooth and efficient client experience
  • making sure you receive updated information on Turner Contemporary’s activities
  • providing the services you have requested
  • carrying out own marketing and audience research to better understand who our audiences, visitors, participants and supporters are and better target our retail, marketing and fundraising activities
  • measuring and understanding how our audiences respond to a variety of marketing activity so we can ensure our activity is well targeted, relevant and effective
  • sending direct marketing material to supporters by post or email for marketing, retail and/or fundraising purposes
  • administering events
  • taking and using photos and/or films of event participants and attendees
  • sending relevant communications to your work or personal email address
  • recruiting staff and taking applications for volunteers and contacting volunteers about their role
  • using CCTV recording equipment in and around our premises for monitoring and security purposes
  • promoting Turner Contemporary on social media, Google, YouTube and other online platforms


In many instances, we will rely on obtaining your consent to our use of your personal information in a certain way (for example, asking for your consent to use your personal information to send you direct marketing information, and we may ask for your explicit consent to share sensitive personal information with us).


We may need to collect, process and disclose personal information to comply with a legal obligation. For example, where we are ordered by a court or regulatory authority or we are legally required to hold donor transaction details for Gift Aid or accounting/tax purposes. We may also use personal information to cross-check and prevent known malicious activities on Turner Contemporary operated services.


We may collect and process personal information in the course of performance of a contract. For example if you purchase something from our online shop or agree to work for us, we need to be able to process your information for the purpose of meeting our contractual obligations.

10. Sharing your information

Except as expressly set out in this policy we will never sell, distribute or lease your personal information to third parties unless we have your permission or are required by law to do so.

The personal information you provide to us may be shared with third party companies, agents, contractors, service providers or affiliated companies if this is necessary to provide you with our services, respond to your inquiries or for any of the purposes described in this policy.

We may also share your personal information with law enforcement agencies, other governmental agencies or third parties if we are required by law to do so.

11. Your Rights

You have legal rights in relation to our collection and processing of your personal information and at any time, you have the right:

  • to be told how your personal information will be used. This Policy and other policies and statements used on this website and in our communications are intended to provide you with a clear and transparent description of how your personal information may be used.
  • to request access to or a copy of any personal data which we hold about you;
  • to rectification of your personal data, if you consider that the information we are holding is inaccurate;
  • to ask us to delete your personal data, if you consider that we do not have the right to hold it;
  • to withdraw consent to our processing of your personal data (to the extent such processing is based on previously obtained consent);
  • to ask us to stop or start sending you marketing messages as described below in the marketing section;
  • to restrict processing of your personal data;
  • to data portability (moving some of your personal data elsewhere) in certain circumstances;
  • to object to your personal data being processed in certain circumstances; and
  • to not be subject to a decision based on automated processing and to have safeguards put in place if you are being profiled based on your personal data.

Any request from you for access to or a copy of your personal data must be in writing and we will endeavour to respond within a reasonable period and in any event within one month in compliance with data protection legislation. We will comply with our legal obligations as regards your rights as a data subject.

12. Marketing

Where you have agreed to be contacted for marketing, we may use your personal information to send you information about events, exhibitions, fundraising campaigns, shop, learning programme and workshops. You can unsubscribe from receiving them at any time, details of how to unsubscribe will be included on each electronic mailing we send you.

13. Unsubscribing

You have the option of “unsubscribing” from our mailing lists and other communications at any time. Doing so will stop any further e-mail or other communications (as per your expressed wishes) from being sent to you. You can unsubscribe at any time by emailing or clicking on the unsubscribe link in an email from us.

We will action any opt out request from you without delay.

14. How long will we keep your information?

We will only keep the information we collect about you for as long as required for the purposes set out in this Policy or as required to comply with any legal obligations to which we are subject. This will involve us periodically reviewing our files to check that information is accurate, up-to-date and still required.  Personal information that we no longer need is securely disposed of and/or anonymised so you can no longer be identified from it. We will however hold purchase information indefinitely for the purposes of provenance and record keeping. Some personal information may be retained by us in archives for statistical or historical research purposes although we will do this in a manner that complies with applicable data protection law.

Where we are permitted to send you direct marketing communications we may retain your contact information necessary for this purpose, for as long as you do not unsubscribe from receiving the same from us.

If you have indicated that you do not wish to be contacted by us for marketing purposes, we will retain your details on a ‘do not contact’ list to help ensure that we do not contact you accidentally. However, we may still need to contact you if you carry on dealing with us, including (but not limited to):

  • processing a donation you make or any continuing direct debit
  • providing you with information you need in order to participate in an activity or event for which you have registered
  • explaining and apologising where we have made a mistake
  • dealing with future legal claims in connection with a contract we have with you

We do not intentionally gather personal information from visitors who are under the age of 13, without their parental or guardian’s consent. If a parent or guardian becomes aware that his or her child has provided us with information without their consent, he or she should contact us at the contact information provided above. We will delete such information from our files as soon as reasonably practicable.

19. How we use cookies

A cookie is a small file which asks permission to be placed on your computer’s hard drive. Once you agree, the file is added and the cookie helps analyse web traffic or lets you know when you visit a particular site.

We use traffic log cookies to identify which pages are being used. This helps us analyse data about web page traffic and improve our website in order to tailor it to customer needs. We only use this information for statistical analysis purposes and then the data is removed from the system.
